Instagram account safety: protect the account you built

1. Find out where you stand

Account Status is Instagram's own record of your account. It's in Settings, below More info and support.

If there's something here you don't recognize, deal with it today. Instagram says that in most cases you'll get a warning before losing access. Most cases isn't all of them.

2. Lock down your login

Your login is the front door. Lock it.

  • Keep two-factor authentication on. Instagram calls it "the single most effective step to protect your account from hackers."
  • Use an authentication app rather than text messages, as Instagram recommends.
  • Use a password you've never used anywhere else.
  • Be careful which third-party apps you authorize.
  • Save your backup codes so a lost phone doesn't lock you out.

3. Get your link off a shared domain

This is the one most creators miss, and it's the one you can fix for good.

On a traditional link in bio, you share an address with everyone else on that tool. You can't see who they are or what they're posting. If that domain gets flagged, you pay for what they did.

If something's already gone wrong

Instagram gives you its own routes, and here's where to find them:

  • The notification: tap Ask for a review.
  • Account Status: select Request a review.
  • Support Inbox: Instagram lists it as another place to ask.
  • A disabled account: Instagram says "you may be able to ask us to review the decision by logging into Instagram and following the on-screen instructions."

Then fix the link, so you aren't sharing a domain's risk on top of everything else.
