Auto-Renew: What It Does and How to Manage It
Auto-Renew Keeps Your Domain From Expiring
Auto-renew makes sure your domain renews itself before its expiration date — so you don't have to remember a yearly chore. It's on by default for any domain you buy through LinkHaven, and you can toggle it off (or back on) at any time.
How It Works
Auto-renew is a setting on each domain you bought through LinkHaven. It's on by default when you buy, and you can turn it off or on anytime on the Custom domains screen. LinkHaven handles the renewal itself. Your registrar's own auto-renew is never used.
When auto-renew is on:
- About 7 weeks before the domain expires, we email you the amount and the date we'll charge. We always email you at least 30 days before we charge.
- About 3 weeks before it expires, we charge your saved card the domain's renewal price and renew the domain once the payment succeeds. You get a receipt email.
- The renewal price is the one shown when you bought the domain.
If the payment fails (your card is declined, your bank needs extra confirmation, or there's no saved card), we don't renew the domain. We email you so you can update your card or renew it yourself, and we try again about 14, 7, 3 and 1 day before it expires.
Where to Find the Toggle
Open your dashboard and find the domain card under Custom domains. You'll see an Auto-renew label with a status pill — green when it's on; gray, amber, or red when it's off (the color shifts more urgent as your expiration date gets closer).
Click the toggle to flip it. There's no separate save step.
Turning Auto-Renew Off
Flipping auto-renew from on to off shows a quick confirmation prompt — just to make sure you meant to. Once you confirm, we won't charge your card for this domain's renewal. The domain stays active until its current expiration date, then it lapses unless you renew it yourself before that. We'll email you reminders 60, 30, 7 and 1 day before it expires, on the day it expires, and 7, 14 and 30 days after. To renew it yourself, use the Renew button on the Custom domains screen.
Turning Auto-Renew Back On
Turning auto-renew back on is instant — one click flips it, no confirmation needed. We'll charge your saved card for the next renewal as described above.
What Auto-Renew Doesn't Do
Auto-renew handles the domain's renewal payment, not the LinkHaven subscription. Your LinkHaven plan and your domain renewal are separate charges.
If you cancel your LinkHaven membership, a domain you bought through LinkHaven that is set to auto-renew still renews each year, unless you turn auto-renew off.
When to Leave It Off
Most customers leave it on. If you're winding down a domain and don't plan to keep it past the current term, turn auto-renew off. A domain that isn't renewed before it expires may become unavailable, and we can't guarantee it can be recovered.
